Our Parish Story at Grace Episcopal Church |
The congregation of Grace Church consists of persons of all ages, from diverse cultures, and with varied lifestyles.
On Sunday (post-Katrina) we worship in English at 10:00 a.m., in a mixture of English and Spanish texts and music.
We are deeply
rooted in this old port city of New Orleans. In 1805 the first
non-Roman Catholic
Church in New Orleans was organized as Christ Church and the
congregation voted to affiliate with the Episcopal Church. In 1886, as Christ
Church (later Christ Church Cathedral) prepared to move from Canal
Street
to its current uptown location, Episcopalians who lived in
downtown
New Orleans gathered to worship in a room above a hardware store, and
fittingly, called
themselves the Fellowship of the Upper Room. This congregation, soon
named Grace Church,
occupied buildings on Rampart Street and at 1501 Canal Street before
moving to
its present home at 3700 Canal Street in 1951. Our current building was
dedicated on September 12, 1954.
From the beginning we have ministered to urban neighborhoods, and as our neighborhood changed, so have we. In the late 1960s, we initiated services in Spanish for the Hispanic people living in our Mid-City neighborhood. At the same time we began to serve our neighbors through ministries like the Grace Child Center, the Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen, and the Immigrant Education Project.
In recent years we have renewed our commitment to education. There is now weekly bible study and many opportunities for short term in-depth study opportunities, such as Grace Church Liturgy Workshop and Via Media for adults. Children are welcomed, valued, and appreciated.
