The Labyrinth in Grace Church

The flooding following Hurricane Katrina destroyed everything in our church below 4 ft. We lost our pews, the floor covering and everything thing else below the 4 foot water line. As a mid- to long-term solution, we decided to paint our concrete floor  and include a labyrinth to provide a place of contemplation, comfort and transformation for people in our devastated city and  Mid-City neighborhood.

Our labyrinth is a 36' Medieval type Chartres Cathedral replica. It was designed by Aimée Dominique and Anne Hollier of Lafayette, La. On June 10-11, 2006, they drew the outline of the labyrinth. It was painted by members of the parish, and our friends from Grace Church, New York City. A second coat and the sealing of floor was done a few weeks later by parishioners and folks from Grace Church, Providence RI.

The labyrinth is open to the public before and after worship services and whenever the parish office is open. Monday – Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon and by appointment. Open labyrinth walks are held weekly in Advent and Lent and at other times.

The labyrinth was dedicated on Saturday, August 26, 2006 in the context of  the 1st Katrina Anniversary.

For more information about the Labyrinth visit the Veriditas website, or look at The Rev'd Canon Lauren Artress's newest book. We are also listed in the world-wide Labyrinth Locator
